Belgian Market Day

On Saturday, the 8th of October, the 3rd edition of the of the annual Belgian Market Day takes place at the Fourways Farmers Market. The market, organized by the Belgian Chamber of Commerce for Southern Africa, showcases a wide range of the wonderful Belgian products that are available in South Africa. The Belgian Market Day has been a great success for the past two years with thousands of visitors. The General Representation will be present at the Market Day with a stall, aimed at providing information about Flanders.

European Day of Languages

The European Day of Languages is an opportunity to experience the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe in a fun-filled afternoon at the Alliance Française of Johannesburg. The Alliance, in partnership with a number of European language and culture organisations, is hosting an exciting programme for this year’s European Day of Languages. Try out the speak-dating, join in a multilingual karaoke competition, or experience the outdoor market offering culinary delights and loads of information from participating countries.

 

The General Representation takes part in the opening event of the European Day of Languages, which consists of a short movie screening on Friday 7 October in the evening at the Bioscope in Maboneng. The entrance is free.

Flanders' Pretoria office blows out 20 candles

On the 14th of February, our office celebrates 20 years in South Africa!

A trade office for Flanders had already been established in Johannesburg and Cape Town as early as 1 January 1994. It would however take another 5 years before the first General Representative of the Government of Flanders (known as the Counsellor for the Flemish Community), Mr. Yves Wantens, took up the post in Pretoria. was succeeded by Mr. David Maenaut, whose mandate ran from September 2008 to July 2014. His successor, since July 2014, is Dr. Geraldine Reymenants.

Ministerial PAGE Conference

On 10 and 11 January the General Representative of the Government of Flanders, Dr. Geraldine Reymenants, participated in the third Ministerial PAGE Conference, in Cape Town, South Africa, where she advocated for more ambitious action to reduce our carbon footprint. The PAGE Conference brought together political leaders, UN agencies, civil society representatives and practitioners to discuss successes and challenges regarding the transition to a green and inclusive economy in their respective countries. Participants discussed themes such as social inclusion, circular economy, green finance and sustainable consumption and production.
