Science Forum South Africa

The Department of Science and Technology will host the third Science Forum South Africa from 7-8 December at the CSIR Convention Center in Pretoria. The General Representation of the Government of Flanders will have an exhibition space to highlight ground-breaking projects resulting from cooperation between Flemish and South African universities, and which are relevant to the Science Forum's overarching theme to "ignite conversations about science".

Joint Committee for Cooperation between Flanders and South Africa

On 4 December, the eighth Joint Committee for Cooperation between Flanders and South Africa took place in Pretoria. The governments of Flanders and South Africa have enjoyed a fruitful relationship over the past twenty years. The meeting provided room for a mutual discussion on political, social and economic trends and for an extensive overview of these longstanding bilateral relations. Several common interests and topics for future cooperation were identified, including innovation, research, blue and circular economy, youth, and culture.

€ 5 million for agricultural projects in Malawi

On 16 November, the Government of Flanders approved a grant of 5 million Euro for agricultural projects in Malawi. A total of 300,000 families in rural areas will benefit. “The majority of the population consists of smallholder farmers. By increasing their productivity and improving market access for crops, Flanders chooses to contribute towards an efficient agricultural policy in Malawi,” according to Minister-president Geert Bourgeois.

Flemish street art in Cape Town

Harrington Street in Cape Town has acquired a whole new look, thanks to Flemish street artist Smates. With the support of the Government of Flanders in collaboration with Baz-Art, Smates (Bart Smeets), has created a 400 m2 public art work - the largest mural in Cape Town. Capetonians and visitors were able to watch the artist at work from 5 to 11 November.
