Two Flemish bands at Oppikoppi Festival

Oppikoppi is one of the biggest multiple day music festivals in South Africa, held in the mining town of Northam in the Limpopo province. The festival this year takes place from 5 to 7 October. It attracts more than 20.000 people each year, who come to enjoy rock or one of the many other music genres on stage. Recently, the festival started a cooperation with the Pukkelpop festival in Flanders. As a result of this cooperation, two Flemish bands are on the line up this year: Sleepers’ Reign and Intergalactic Lovers. You can come and watch both bands on Saturday 7 October: Sleepers’ Reign at 15:00 on the main stage and Intergalactic Lovers at 21:00 on the bruilof stage. Science Forum South Africa

On 8-9 December 2016, the second edition of the Science Forum South Africa took place in the CSIR Convention Center in Pretoria. The science fair was organized by the South African Department of Science & Technology and brought together 1500 participants from all over Africa and the world, from academics and government officials to industry leaders and students. The theme for this year's edition was "Ignite Conversations about Science".
The General Representation of the Government of Flanders was one of the exhibitors at the Science Forum 2016. At our stall, we highlighted some of the most innovative Africa-focused research projects from Flanders.

Flemish Children's Rights Commissioner visits South Africa and Mozambique

 The Flemish Children’s Rights Commissioner, Bruno Vanobbergen, visited South Africa and Mozambique from 28 November to 2 December. The visit was aimed at exchanging ideas and experiences on a children's rights policy, the instruments and the monitoring mechanisms. To this end, Mr Vanobbergen held a number of meetings with government departments, ngo's and international organisations. He also went on a number of field visits to see the children's rights approaches of these organisations on the ground.

SA Land Observatory launched

On Thursday 24 November, the South African Land Observatory was launched at a workshop in Pretoria. The SA Land Observatory was developed by the University of Pretoria’s Post-Graduate School of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Agricultural Economics and the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovations. The Observatory is an independent instrument used to collect, map and monitor land-related processes and activities in South Africa, including the right to land, agricultural production and aspects of food security.
