In the framework of Heritage Month, the Government of Flanders, in partnership with Freedom Park, is pleased to host a screening of the documentary Mutoli wa Nyimbo dza Tshivenda na Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho (The Joy of Tshivenda Songs with Vhvenda Vho-JK Mathoho), followed by a music performance and fireside chat with Vho-JK Mathoho.

The documentary tells the story of 85-year-old Vho-JK Mathoho, a legendary musician from Tshiombo, Limpopo who plays traditional Tshivenda music and instruments, such as the mbila (thumb piano). In the documentary, he talks about the formative experiences in his life and the cultural influences that shaped his music.

Vho-JK Mathoho is a gifted musician who has contributed to the preservation of Tshivenda music and dance. A respected. elder and community leader, his engagement includes founding the local football team, Tshiombo Securitas XI.

The documentary evokes not just the power of music in shaping communities and transmitting cultural memory from generation to generation, but also recalls a way of life and an intangible cultural heritage that are in danger of being lost in today’s world.
