From 24 to 28 February, the Centre for Human Rights of the University of Pretoria, presented the annual Advanced Human Rights Course (AHRC) on Sexual Minority Rights in Africa. The course, supported by the Government of Flanders, was presented in collaboration with the KU Leuven and Çavaria, Belgium. During the week, participants discussed SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and sex characteristics) concepts and looked into the challenges faced by LGBTIQ+ persons in Africa.

The Government of Flanders actively supports projects around gender and sexual identity, and also places emphasis on human rights in both its domestic and foreign policy. Flanders has been providing support for AHRC short courses since 2012.
