Flanders remains committed to the fight against climate change. The Government of Flanders approved several grants to support sustainable climate projects in Southern Africa. These grants contribute to Flanders’ ambition to strengthen the climate resilience in the South.

The Government of Flanders granted a total contribution of 4.5 million Euro to three innovative climate projects in Africa:

  • - A grant was approved to Enabel for the Climate-Smart development project in Mozambique. Enabel is the first development agency in Mozambique which improves sustainable access to safe and affordable drinking water through a systemic approach en-compassing renewable energy, healthy living, empowerment of communities and local economic stakeholders. The Belgian agency aims to remove the salt from brackish water in order to make it poatable and to allow its use for drinking. Thus, it contributes to the reduction of waterborne diseases such as cholera.
  • - The Government of Flanders also granted the World Food Programme in Mozambique. The general objective of the project is to strengthen the resilience of 16,000 households in the most affected districts of Tete and Gaza.
  • - A third grant was provided to the African Climate Change Fund (ACCF). By investing 1 million euros in climate finance readiness in these countries, Flanders contributes to esuring that international climate financing are also effectively channelled to Africa, which suffers most from climate change.
