The Government of Flanders, through the UNESCO Trust Fund, supports a project to protect the underwater cultural heritage (UCH) in Mozambique. The project "Building Capacity for Protecting Underwater Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Development in Africa" aims to improve the protection and management of maritime and underwater cultural heritage, more specifically regional training on the legal protection and practical management of the underwater cultural heritage around the Mozambique Island.
Currently, trainees are diving on shipwreck sites every morning and attending lessons on research, policy and conservation in the afternoon. In addition, a new center for UCH research is being set up.
