European Day of Languages

The European Day of Languages is an opportunity to experience the linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe in a fun-filled afternoon at the Alliance Française of Johannesburg. The Alliance, in partnership with a number of European language and culture organisations, is hosting an exciting programme for this year’s European Day of Languages. Try out the speak-dating, join in a multilingual karaoke competition, or experience the outdoor market offering culinary delights and loads of information from participating countries.

 

The General Representation takes part in the opening event of the European Day of Languages, which consists of a short movie screening on Friday 7 October in the evening at the Bioscope in Maboneng. The entrance is free.

Science Forum South Africa

On 8-9 December 2016, the second edition of the Science Forum South Africa took place in the CSIR Convention Center in Pretoria. The science fair was organized by the South African Department of Science & Technology and brought together 1500 participants from all over Africa and the world, from academics and government officials to industry leaders and students. The theme for this year's edition was "Ignite Conversations about Science".
The General Representation of the Government of Flanders was one of the exhibitors at the Science Forum 2016. At our stall, we highlighted some of the most innovative Africa-focused research projects from Flanders.

Flemish Children's Rights Commissioner visits South Africa and Mozambique

 The Flemish Children’s Rights Commissioner, Bruno Vanobbergen, visited South Africa and Mozambique from 28 November to 2 December. The visit was aimed at exchanging ideas and experiences on a children's rights policy, the instruments and the monitoring mechanisms. To this end, Mr Vanobbergen held a number of meetings with government departments, ngo's and international organisations. He also went on a number of field visits to see the children's rights approaches of these organisations on the ground.

SA Land Observatory launched

On Thursday 24 November, the South African Land Observatory was launched at a workshop in Pretoria. The SA Land Observatory was developed by the University of Pretoria’s Post-Graduate School of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Department of Agricultural Economics and the Centre for the Study of Governance Innovations. The Observatory is an independent instrument used to collect, map and monitor land-related processes and activities in South Africa, including the right to land, agricultural production and aspects of food security.
