Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees

The KKNK (Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees) takes place in Outdtshoorn from 8-15 April. This ever popular festival boasts a strong Flemish presence this year as the Government of Flanders is supporting a number of events. First up is KRITIEK, a new project launched by Kunste Onbeperk to promote arts journalism. Six writers will participate in a Festival mentorship programme, which includes workshops (6 and 7 April). Flemish art journalist Evelyne Coussens was one of the workshop presenters. The Government of Flanders has also provided the support to bring choreographer Benjamin Vandewalle to the KKNK where he will stage his Walking the LIne, a cross between performance, choreography and installations. Ma tête est mon village (My head is my village) showcases another Flemish choreographer, Jan Wallyn.

6th Annual Consultation on Development Cooperation between Flanders and South Africa in Pretoria

On 12 October the Governments of South Africa and Flanders held their 6th Annual Consultation on Development Cooperation in Pretoria. Delegations of the governments of South Africa and Flanders discussed the implementation of ongoing development cooperation programmes. South African government departments and agencies presented results and challenges, and partners discussed the way forward. 

Launch of the Ghent University and VUB Alumni Chapters in South Africa

On 1 October, the University of Western Cape hosted the launch of the Ghent University and VUB Alumni Chapters in South Africa. The Vice-Chancellors of UWC, Ghent University and VUB welcomed the alumni and stressed the relevance of international experiences and connecting with students and alumni. H.E. Amb. Didier Vanderhasselt, Ambassador Designate of Belgium, and Dr. Geraldine Reymenants, General Representative of the Government of Flanders, both attended the event. The Alumni Chapters will actively contribute to the already strong, existing academic ties between Flemish and South African universities.

Government of Flanders supports a Viva Africa project for HIV prevention in Mozambique

The Government of Flanders has decided to allocate 350.000 euros to ngo Viva Africa for the ‘Improving women’s health’ project in Mozambique. The project focuses on the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT), HIV treatment and a Human Papillomavirus (HPV) screening. The project is being rolled out across the regions Maputo City, Machava and Matola.

Flanders Day celebration in Pretoria

On Friday 1 June we hosted a reception in honour of the day of the Flemish Community, co-hosted by the General Representative Dr. Geraldine Reymenants and Trade and Investment Counsellor Mr. Marc Schiltz. Guest speakers Dr. Monde Tom from the Economic Development Department and H.E. Ambassador Lallie from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation spoke about the strong ties between the Governments of South Africa and Flanders. Colleagues, partners, compatriots and friends enjoyed the day - celebrated annually in Flanders on 11 July in remembrance of the Battle of the Golden Spurs – with some traditional frites and mayonnaise and some great Belgian beers!
